Jodana
Electrolux Jodana is a sustainable ecosystem of cooktops that grows with the user.
Design sprint | Team member- Luisa Ebeling, Inda Gaytan, Niklas Muhs | 4 weeks | 2023 | University: Umea Institute of design
Overview
To design a progressive premium experience and Imagine the future of single, compact living in vibrant urban settings like New York, Munich, Mumbai, and Hong Kong. Jodana is a sustainable cooking ecosystem aimed at migrants looking for better social and economic situations and avoiding the consumption of disposable electronic devices, which lead to tons of e-waste every year. This can be possible thanks to additional hobs and other peripherals that can be attached to grow with you.
My Role:
Apart from research, ideation, and user-journey mapping which was mostly a group effort, some of my specific roles during this project included ethnography, conducting interviews, and 3d visualization.
Focus area
In underdeveloped countries, family members often move to big cities in search of better-paying jobs, leaving loved ones behind temporarily. This is also common in Mumbai, India. Rural-to-urban migration is becoming increasingly prevalent in developing urban areas as people aim to improve their economic situation. However, it can cause emotional strain due to family separation and the challenges of adapting to a new environment.
User analysis
The most important part of our research in the project was an interview with a male person from Mumbai who is in the age group of our Persona, through the interview, we were able to gain many insights that were not only important for validation but also led to a quick decision making in the Sprint Project.
How might we create sustainable solutions in the short and long-term while cooking?
-
Connected while cooking apart
-
Uniting for cooking
-
Growing into a family
-
Jodana grows with you
Sketch Video
During the project, to enhance immersion and facilitate deeper exploration, and communicate usage scenarios we used VR tools to gain a better understanding of usability.
Prototyping
The use of prototyping was highly beneficial for our team as it allowed us to quickly test and develop ideas within a short timeframe. In particular, the combination of cardboard mockups, CAD, and VR prototypes enabled us to make swift decisions during the design process. By having multiple variations of prototypes available, we were able to consider various design options and make spontaneous decisions on which direction to pursue.
Interaction
We conducted tests with a low-fidelity prototype to verify the physical interaction of the product. This objective allowed us to gain insights into the product's scale and the semantics associated with user interaction.
Concept
“Jodana” is a growing ecosystem of cooktops that adapts to the user’s circumstances. It allows for being complemented by additional hobs, hoods, stands, and other controls. It strengthens the connection to heritage and cohabitants, becoming greater and greater over a lifetime.
