Dex

A wearable device that enhances your diabetes testing experience on a daily basis.

Personal Project - 2021 | 4 weeks

Overview

Dex is a smart modern-day solution that offers needleless glucose testing. It works primarily by analyzing the glucose that is present in your sweat. The device essentially uses a wearable patch to monitor your glucose data. It also delivers an ecosystem where all first responders including the patient's physician are connected to an online system where your diabetes stats is continuously updated. This helps the doctor to deliver a personalized treatment based on the patient's needs and requirements.

How can I improve the experience for diabetic patients?

Concept exploration

The idea was to have a wearable patch without any needle on it that could last on your body for at least 14 days. That’s where I came up with the concept of a wearable sweat patch that includes a transmitter with dedicated sensors to continuously monitor glucose levels and a receiver that notifies the user of accurate readings every hour.

Building the experience

Once the final idea and form were shaped, I tested some mockups and started building the user experience. This step allowed me to understand the product and the interaction on a more intricate level.

DEX - Needleless diabetes testing

It's a goodbye to pricking your skin anymore! Dex is a smart modern-day solution that offers needleless glucose testing on a daily basis. It also caters to an ecosystem where your active physician and first responders are connected to the user in case of extreme emergencies.

DEX comes with 3 different units - Receiver / Sweat patch / Transmitter

Receiver

The lightweight, easy-to-carry Dex receiver is a display device that shows glucose readings in real-time and can share that same information with primary responders and the user’s physician via Dex application. It also provides an intuitive UI and alerts the user when high or low glucose thresholds are reached.

Sweat patch

The patch does not pierce the skin but draws glucose from the fluid between the cells of the hair follicles, which are individually accessed by a series of miniature sensors embedded into the patch. It is also waterproof and can be easily adapted to your skin due to its flexibility. It’s a simple use-and-throw patch that can last on your skin for at least 10 to 14 days.

Transmitter

The transmitter is more comfortable and convenient to use with its sleek design and easy removal. It easily snaps onto the electrodes on the sweat patch and sends real-time glucose readings wirelessly to your compatible display device or an optional Dex receiver via Bluetooth.

User-experience

In addition to having an optional receiver, the user can also check their diabetic stats on other compatible devices by downloading the Dex app. In doing so the experience becomes much more seamless and convenient in terms of daily use.

Remote patient monitoring

The patient's information and medical data can be directly accessed by their personal physician at any point in time. They can see their patient's ongoing progress and adjust the treatment to their current needs. The Dex app also provides in-depth statistics and is easily manageable for the doctor to keep a focused record of all the patients at the same time.
